Critical Care Echo.. Glenfield Hospital leads the way with BodyWorks Eve

Dr Gary Lau, ITU Consultant and Hannah Conway, Advanced Critical Care Practitioner at Glenfield Hospital share their thoughts on the new BodyWorks Eve and how the new PoCUS and Echo training simulator is supporting the hospital’s g&h CritCareEcho program.

“We first met EVE back in July 2018. Our vision was to integrate a simulator into our existing echo and ultrasound teaching programmes for both our basic and advanced level echo and ultrasound courses. We wanted a simulator that could offer the quality of both ‘Heartworks’ echocardiography but also offer the ability to scan lung, abdominal and pelvic pathology; EVE fulfilled this requirement….and more.

The main selling point for us, is that we are able to demonstrate pathology, something we were not able to previously do when using fit volunteers. With the integration of the ‘Heartworks’ simulator in the Bodyworks model, this provides us the complete Point-of-Care Ultrasound simulation solution. Furthermore, the ability to set up scenarios and run them during a simulation session, truly tests the learner’s ability to integrate POCUS into their clinical assessment of the patient. EVE increases the authenticity of simulation training through its ‘situated cognition’, as the knowledge gained by the candidates is embedded and solidified through the delivery of learning in the relevant clinical context and the authenticity of the learning environment.

We have used EVE for all of ultrasound courses, both focused and advanced. Eve has transformed the way in which we deliver simulation training. Our candidates are able to experience pathology that no other course can offer at the moment. This results in our courses consistently gaining excellent feedback, particularly the hands-on workshop sessions. We were the first UK centre to purchase EVE and have since then held multiple successful courses with EVE at the forefront. We’d like to think that we have showcased EVE and her potential and will continue to do so.’
